Next generation communications for a 21st century health service

Ensuring that health service workers can communicate with each other effectively and the general public can reach those in the know is critical to fulfilling the NHS’s remit.

As such, these two customer examples from ntl:Telewest Business highlight the benefits that intelligent network provision can provide to NHS decision makers, staff and patients.

Case Studies

Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust:
3,500 lines, three hospitals, one voice solution

Name: Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Location: Kent and North-East Sussex

Business challenge: To provide all voice requirements for the three main hospitals, with no disruption to the day-to-day running of the hospitals

Solution: A fully managed telephony solution, able to provide round the clock care for its three hospitals

Products: ntl:Telewest Business Centrex

Business benefits: Using a Centrex solution, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust were able to make free internal calls between all the three hospitals giving them a huge reduction in operational costs, in addition to the lower implementation costs associated with the Centrex solution. The project was also one of the largest of its kind but it was implemented with no disruption to the day-to-day running of the hospitals which was of paramount importance.

Network upgrades enable e-care at Yorkhill NHS Trust

Name: Yorkhill NHS Trust

Location: Glasgow

Business challenge: Yorkhill’s network was no longer supporting the hospital adequately. Many years of growth and change at the hospital had resulted in a piecemeal network architecture, which made the network inefficient.

Solution: ntl:Telewest Business provided Yorkhill with a new network, which involved a campus-wide upgrade of the structured cabling system, using Krone PremisNET Category 5e cabling, and installing Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Switches in the backbone, with Cisco Catalyst 2950 Series Switches at the edge. The result is a resilient network that delivers Gigabit Ethernet to bedsides and desktops.

Products: Network design and installation, project management, network maintenance

Business benefits: Increased capacity and speed are enabling Yorkhill to introduce bandwidth-hungry, leading edge applications that are revolutionising patient care. Flexibility, scalability and a well laid-out infrastructure will allow Yorkhill to grow and change the network quickly and easily, making the network easier to maintain. Quality of service (QoS) ensures the network delivers services consistently and in a timely manner. Resilience enables Yorkhill to run mission-critical applications with confidence.
